Magnesium BHB in Retride: What It Is, What Studies Used, and the Magnesium It Carries
Quick answer
Magnesium BHB is the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate bound to magnesium. Retride lists it in a 60 mg blend with calcium and sodium BHB, with no amount of its own. No human trial has tested magnesium BHB alone; the closest study gave teens 3.75 g of a three-salt blend twice a day. A 60 mg blend cannot carry much magnesium.

What is magnesium BHB?
Magnesium BHB is beta-hydroxybutyrate, the main ketone body, bound to the mineral magnesium. The bond turns BHB into a dry salt that can go into a powder or a capsule.
In Retride it is the first of three salts in a 60 mg proprietary blend, next to calcium BHB and sodium BHB. The label prints only the blend total, so the amount of magnesium BHB in each serving is unknown.

How is magnesium BHB thought to work?
The idea is simple. When the salt dissolves, the BHB part enters the blood, the same ketone your liver makes on a keto diet or during a fast. The magnesium part is the carrier.
At gram doses that idea holds for a few hours. In studies of other BHB salts, blood ketones peaked in about an hour and were back to baseline in 3 to 4 hours (Frontiers in Physiology, Stubbs 2017, Metabolism of exogenous ketones).
Two limits matter. Swallowed BHB does not make your liver produce ketones, and a 2025 review says exogenous ketones may not directly cause weight loss (Nutrition Reviews, Biesiekierska 2025, Ketogenic nutrition and obesity). Ketosis on the label's 70/25/5 plan comes from that diet.

What did studies of magnesium BHB find?
No human trial of magnesium BHB on its own was found. It shows up only as one part of mixed salt blends, so its own effect cannot be pulled out of the results.
| Study | Who and how much | What it found | Read with care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three-salt blend (Nutrients, Stefan 2021, Sodium/calcium/magnesium BHB salt in adolescents) | Ages 10 to 17; sodium, calcium and magnesium BHB, 3.75 g per serving twice a day (7.5 g a day) for 90 days | Ketones 0.7 mmol/L at 15 minutes and 0.4 at 60 minutes after one serving (6 people); no safety problems in blood tests | Supplied and funded by Pruvit Ventures, a ketone company; two authors have ties. Teenagers, not adults |
| Mineral BHB salts with a diet (Nutrients, Roeth 2025, BHB salts with a low-calorie diet) | 51 adults on about 500 kcal a day below their needs; 5 g twice a day for 8 weeks | 3.05 kg lost vs 1.51 kg on placebo, not a significant difference (p = 0.09) | Funded by Ketone Labs; the senior author has ties. The salt mix is not broken down by mineral |
| Review of 51 studies (Nutrients, Mohib 2025, Exogenous ketosis in adults with disease (systematic review)) | Adults with disease; only 5 studies used ketone salts | Benefits mostly on lab markers, in small, short studies; no weight-loss results reported | Esters, not salts, looked better for reaching ketosis |
The teen study is the closest match to the Retride mix, because it used the same three salts. It is still no basis for adult claims, and the label says the product is not for anyone under 18.
How does 60 mg compare with the grams in studies?
The whole Retride blend weighs 60 mg, and magnesium BHB is only part of it. The smallest studied blend serving that held magnesium BHB was 3.75 g, about 62 times the entire blend.

Amount of magnesium BHB
Supplement Facts panelOnly the 60 mg blend total is printed. The magnesium BHB share could be any part of it.
This is a gap in size, not a test result. All we know is that 60 mg is far below every amount studied, and that nobody has measured what it does.
How much magnesium can 60 mg carry?
Less than 60 mg, and in practice less than that, because the blend is shared by three salts and BHB makes up part of each salt's weight. That is under a fifth of the upper limit for magnesium from supplements.
| Amount | Magnesium | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Upper limit from supplements and medicines, adults | 350 mg a day | Set by the NIH (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Magnesium fact sheet) |
| Whole Retride blend, if it were all magnesium BHB | Less than 60 mg | Under a fifth of the limit; the real share is smaller |
| Studied gram-dose blends | Not reported per mineral | Grams of salt bring far more mineral than milligrams |
So the capsules are not a magnesium load. The limit matters for products that follow the studied doses, and for anyone who adds several magnesium products together.
What side effects do BHB salts and magnesium cause at high doses?
Stomach and gut trouble is the main one, and it was reported at gram doses. A higher dose of ketone salt caused more symptoms than a lower one, though most were mild and short-lived (Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab, Stubbs 2019, GI effects of ketone drinks).
- Diarrhea, often with nausea and cramps, from high doses of supplemental magnesium.
- Upset stomach and loose stools after large single doses of mixed BHB salts.
- In the 8-week diet trial, gut events were few: one case of constipation and two of frequent bowel movements in the BHB group.
At 60 mg the blend is far smaller than those doses. Effects of the keto diet the label suggests are a separate topic, covered on the Retride side effects page.
Who should ask a doctor before taking magnesium BHB?
Most of the risk sits with the keto diet the label suggests, not with 60 mg of salts. These groups should talk to a doctor or pharmacist first and bring the bottle.
- People with kidney disease. Magnesium toxicity risk rises when the kidneys do not work well (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Magnesium fact sheet), and keto diets need care too.
- People with type 1 diabetes or on an SGLT2 inhibitor medicine. Both carry a ketoacidosis risk, and the FDA lists a low carbohydrate diet as a possible risk factor with SGLT2 inhibitors (FDA Drug Safety Communication, SGLT2 inhibitors and ketoacidosis).
- Anyone pregnant or nursing, and anyone under 18, as the label says.
The other two salts in the blend have their own pages: calcium BHB and sodium BHB. All six label lines are in the Retride ingredients guide.
Magnesium BHB: questions people search
What is magnesium BHB?
It is beta-hydroxybutyrate, the main ketone body, bound to magnesium to make a salt. It is sold as a source of BHB, with magnesium as the carrier.
Is magnesium BHB safe?
No stand-alone safety trial exists. A three-salt blend with magnesium BHB at 7.5 g a day showed no safety problems in blood tests over 90 days in teens, in a study funded by a ketone company.
Magnesium BHB benefits: what do studies show?
Very little that is specific to it. It has only been studied inside blends, which raised blood ketones for a short time but did not show weight loss.
Does magnesium BHB help weight loss?
Not on the evidence we found. BHB salt blends did not add loss to a keto diet, and an 8-week low-calorie trial was not significant against placebo.
How much magnesium BHB per day?
No daily dose has been set. The closest study used 3.75 g of a three-salt blend twice a day; Retride's whole blend is 60 mg.
How much magnesium BHB is in Retride?
The label does not say. Magnesium BHB is one of three salts sharing a 60 mg blend per 2 capsules.
Magnesium BHB vs magnesium citrate: what is the difference?
Magnesium citrate is sold to supply magnesium. Magnesium BHB is sold to supply BHB, with magnesium along for the ride. We found no study comparing them.
Can magnesium BHB cause diarrhea?
High doses of supplemental magnesium can, and so can gram doses of BHB salts. The 60 mg blend in Retride is far below those amounts.
