Calcium BHB in Retride: What It Is, What Studies Found, and Who Should Ask First
Quick answer
Calcium BHB is the ketone beta-hydroxybutyrate bound to calcium. Retride lists it in a 60 mg blend with magnesium and sodium BHB, with no single amount. It has only been studied in mixed salts, at grams per dose: one large calcium-sodium dose gave a small ketone rise and some stomach upset. A 60 mg blend holds far less calcium than the adult limits.

What is calcium BHB?
Calcium BHB is beta-hydroxybutyrate bound to calcium. BHB is the ketone your body makes from fat when carbs are scarce; tying it to calcium makes a stable white powder.
In Retride, calcium BHB is the second of three salts in the 60 mg proprietary blend. The other two are magnesium BHB and sodium BHB. The label gives no separate amount for any of them.

How is calcium BHB thought to work?
In the body the salt splits. The BHB part can be used as fuel, like the ketones your liver makes during a fast. The calcium part is the carrier that makes BHB a solid.
The selling idea is that swallowed BHB raises blood ketones. It can, for a few hours, at gram doses. But it does not switch on your own ketone making, and a 2025 review says exogenous ketones may not directly cause weight loss (Nutrition Reviews, Biesiekierska 2025, Ketogenic nutrition and obesity).
The label pairs the capsules with a 70% fat, 25% protein, 5% carb diet. If ketosis happens on that plan, the food is what causes it.

What did studies of calcium BHB find?
Calcium BHB has never been tested on its own in people, as far as we could find. It appears only in mixed salts, so the calcium part cannot be judged by itself.
| Study | Who and how much | What it found | Read with care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium and calcium BHB salt (J Nutr Metab, Fischer 2018, Sodium and calcium BHB salt in adults) | 6 healthy adults; one dose of 0.5 g per kg of body weight (35 g for a 70 kg adult, our arithmetic) | Blood ketones rose slowly and only a little, peaking at 0.598 mmol/L at 2.5 hours | 1 of 6 dropped out with gut symptoms; the authors said the product cannot be recommended without limits |
| Sodium, calcium and magnesium blend (Nutrients, Stefan 2021, Sodium/calcium/magnesium BHB salt in adolescents) | Ages 10 to 17; 3.75 g per serving, twice a day, for 90 days | Ketones 0.7 mmol/L at 15 minutes after a serving; no safety problems in blood tests | Funded and supplied by Pruvit Ventures, a ketone company; two authors have ties; not adults |
For scale, a review calls nutritional ketosis a blood BHB above 0.5 mmol/L (Frontiers in Nutrition, Skartun 2025, Symptoms when starting a ketogenic diet). A huge single dose of the calcium and sodium salt only just passed that line.
What one large dose did, hour by hour
This track joins the calcium-sodium study with single-dose studies of other BHB salts, so you can see how short the window is even at gram doses.
- 0 h
One large dose
0.5 g per kg of the calcium and sodium salt, taken once.
- 1 h
Other salts peak
D-BHB salts peaked about an hour after a 12 g dose (Frontiers in Nutrition, Cuenoud 2020, D-BHB salts pharmacokinetics).
- 2.5 h
Calcium-sodium salt peaks
A mean of 0.598 mmol/L, a small and slow rise.
- 3 to 4 h
Back to baseline
Single gram-level doses wore off within 3 to 4 hours in these studies.
How does 60 mg compare with the doses studied?
It is tens to hundreds of times smaller. The whole Retride blend is 60 mg; the calcium-sodium study used about 35 g for a 70 kg adult, and the three-salt blend used 3.75 g per serving.
| Dose | Grams | Times the whole 60 mg blend |
|---|---|---|
| Retride blend, all three salts | 0.06 g | 1x |
| Three-salt blend serving (teen study) | 3.75 g | About 62x |
| Calcium-sodium salt, 70 kg adult | About 35 g | About 580x |
And calcium BHB is only one part of the 60 mg. Nobody has measured what an amount this small does, so the honest answer is that it is far below anything studied.
How much calcium can a 60 mg blend carry?
Less than 60 mg of calcium, since the blend holds three salts and BHB is part of every salt's weight. That is under 3% of the lowest adult upper limit.
| Amount | Calcium | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Upper limit, adults 19 to 50 | 2,500 mg a day | NIH (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Calcium fact sheet) |
| Upper limit, adults 51 and older | 2,000 mg a day | Same fact sheet |
| Whole Retride blend, if it were all calcium BHB | Less than 60 mg | Under 3% of 2,000 mg; the real share is smaller |
The limits matter at gram doses, not at 60 mg. Higher intakes of supplemental calcium might raise the risk of kidney stones, and calcium supplements can cause gas, bloating and constipation.
What are calcium BHB side effects?
The side effects on record came from gram doses of mixed salts, and they were mostly in the gut. In the calcium-sodium study, one of six people quit with stomach and gut symptoms and two more had milder ones.
- Stomach upset grew with dose in ketone salt drinks, though most symptoms were mild (Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab, Stubbs 2019, GI effects of ketone drinks).
- The calcium-sodium study could not rule out an effect on the body's acid-base balance at its large dose.
- Calcium supplements on their own can bring gas, bloating and constipation.
The Retride blend is a small fraction of those doses. Effects of the keto diet on the label are listed on the Retride side effects page.
Who should ask a doctor before taking calcium BHB?

No flags here. Keep to 2 capsules a day and follow the label.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first and bring the label. A keto diet needs care with these conditions.
Skip Retride. The label says it is not for anyone under 18.
Type 1 diabetes raises the risk of ketoacidosis (CDC, Diabetic Ketoacidosis), and with SGLT2 inhibitors the FDA names a low carbohydrate diet as a possible risk factor.

Calcium BHB: questions people search
What is calcium BHB?
Calcium BHB is beta-hydroxybutyrate, a ketone body, bound to calcium to make a salt. It is one of three BHB salts in Retride's 60 mg blend.
What does calcium BHB mean?
BHB stands for beta-hydroxybutyrate. "Calcium BHB" means that ketone in salt form, paired with calcium.
Is calcium BHB safe?
It has not been safety-tested alone. In a calcium-sodium salt study at a very large single dose, one of six adults dropped out with gut symptoms.
What are calcium BHB side effects?
At gram doses: stomach upset and loose stools. Calcium supplements can also cause gas, bloating and constipation.
Calcium BHB benefits: what is proven?
Very little. Gram doses of mixed salts raised blood ketones for a few hours; no study shows weight loss from calcium BHB.
How much calcium BHB per day?
No daily amount has been set. Studies gave mixed salts in grams, and the Retride label prints only the 60 mg blend total.
Calcium BHB vs sodium BHB: which is better?
Neither has been shown to be better. Sodium BHB has more studies; the main difference is the mineral each one carries at gram doses.
Are calcium BHB pills worth it?
For weight loss, the evidence does not show it. Pills with milligram amounts sit far below the grams studied.
